I’ve had the honor of playing with some great musicians and ensembles over the years, far more than I feel I deserve, including friends, family, and some famous musicians. That continues on to today, playing with some of the most talented musicians around.
Sometimes luck is just taking advantage of timing. In the mid 1980s, the region hosted a thriving live music scene, and Bob Margolin, a guitarist for the legendary Muddy Waters, moved to Blacksburg to live and perform local clubs. I had the honor getting to know Bob and occasionally sitting in with him at clubs like 117 South Main Cafe.
Winter 1986 edition of Virginia Tech’s Campus Quarterly magazine published an article titled “Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin: Blacksburg’s Blues Brother”, and I happened to photo-bomb one of the pics. I’m still scratching my head about what he said about my playing, and I quote, “You’re better than you think you are.” Thanks?
Now I enjoy playing with far more talented musicians in a Pink Floyd tribute and musical theater with local Christiansburg High.
